  Conservation

Conservation

refers to efforts to preserve materials or objects in their best possible original conditions and keep them save from damages caused by environments or human.

Preservation of Bank Notes

Hands must be washed thoroughly and gloves must be worn to prevent stains caused by sweat, grease and dirt. Bank notes must be kept in controlled environment having 45-50% humidity at 25 degrees Celsius temperature. The room or cabinet must be dust-free. Insecticides can be used to keep away insects.

The paper used to reinforce the bank notes must be acid-free. In case of paper documents or materials getting wet, preservation must be performed instantly. Leaving such paper documents or materials to air-dry will result in the paper becoming attached and inseparable.

Keeping :

All paper materials must be kept in acid-free paper boxes or plastic bags (polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene) and the humidity must be monitored.

 Preservation of Gold Items

Dust and dirt cleaning: Only soft brushes and douche balls are allowed. Use a cotton swab with fine cotton and dip in a mixture of distilled water and non-ionic detergent to scrub the surface of the item and cleanse several times using cotton swabs and distilled water. Grease stains can be removed using ethyl alcohol or acetone.

Keeping :

Containers should be upholstered or cushioned with soft material. Items can also be wrapped with acid-free tissue.

 Preservation of Silver Items

Cleaning silver items can be done the same way as for gold items. An alternative is to prepare a mixture made by grinding soft prepared chalk to powder and mix with 95% alcohol to create a taste with a consistency similar to toothpaste. Then use a cotton swab to dip into the mixture and scrub the surface of the item and cleanse several times with cotton swabs soaked with distilled water.

 Keeping :

Each item should be wrapped seperately with soft acid-free tissue then wrapped over with anti-tarnish paper or wrapped with soft acid-free tissue and kept in plastic bags to prevent forming of dark stains caused by sulfuric pollutants in the air.
