                    On the ground floor, the South Wing houses the World of Money Exhibit
with installation of:

 

 

1. Ancient Money 

              
The exhibit provides the history of Suwannabhum (the Golden Land) as the prosperous center of trades where East meets West acompanied by multi-media presentations and animations. The relic displays feature pre-historic objects such as Ban Chiang potteries, blue beads, Ban Chiang earthen beads, stone bracelets, stone earrings, stone axes and bronze axes. Ancient money on view in this exhibition hall includes Dvaravati money, the very rare Lavapura Coins from U-Thong City and Nutmeg Coins from the Srivijayan Empire. The exhibit is complimented with displays of different local coins namely Jiang, Tok, Pak Mu, Bai Mai, Laad and Hoy coins. On show in the Ancient Money Exhibit are ancient coins from nearby empires proven to have been used in ancient times in the boundaries where Thailand is now situated such as Sai-Si, Hang and Tu coins. 


 

 

 

2. Pod Duang Coins 

                   
This exhibit features the Pod Duang currency invented during the Sukhothai Period and was in use for more than 600 years until its abandon in the reign of King Rama V of the Rattanakosin Dynasty. The biggest attractions among a complete range of Pod Duang coins from all periods are, “Pod Duang Chor Ram Poey” (trumpet flower coin) and “Pod Duang Thong Kam” (gold coin). The details of the Pod Duang coins production are given through a diorama presentation while the production instruments are on display. The multi-media presentation illustrates trading history during the Ayuthaya Period with replicas of Portugese ships sailing back and forth. To add to the viewing excitement are a giant three dimentional Pod Duang coin on a turntable, Pod Duang jigsaw puzzles welcoming anyone who wishes to try his jigsaw skill, Pod Duang coin weight testing to clarify understanding about the weights and values of Pod Duang and computer games examining knowledge obtained from the exhibit.

3.THAI COINS EXHIBIT

                         The Thai Coins Exhibit features the history of coins from the periods of King Rama 3 ( “Chang Muang Thai Coin” and “Dok Bua Muang Thai Coin”) until the present reign highlighting significant coins from different eras such as:  

v      Tae Meng Coin from the period of King Rama 4
v      Nuad Coin from the period of King Rama 5
v      Gold Prototype Coin from the period of King Rama 6 

                          Viewers can learn about coins produced and used during different periods through computer kiosks and wrap up their learning experience by inserting 2 Ten Baht coins into a machine in exchange of a detailed coin production tutorial and a souvenir coin from Bang Khunphrom Palace.
