Since 1969, the Note Printing Works has researched for the possibility of producing printing inks in - house, using local raw materials, to support its banknote production. In 1974, it was successful in producing printing inks from varnish and raw materials acquired from overseas sources, and in 1981 the Note Printing Works was finally able to formulate and produce varnish, a major part of printing inks from raw materials acquired from indigenous sources.
The Ink Production Plant is capable of producing at least 400 tons of printing inks annually under single shift operation for the production of 3,200 million banknotes. In 2006, about 270 tons of inks have seen produced for the production of 2,200 million banknotes, resulting in a saving of 100 million baht value of foreign currency per year. Most importantly, this production capacity is meant for a further expansion of printing ink production in the years to come.
