Importance to Thai economy
Payment systems are crucial mechanism of the economic and financial infrastructure. Safe and effective payment systems will make a key contribution to overall economic performance. However, payment systems can also bring about risks for related parties, especially, the risk caused by a failure of one participant in a transfer system to meet its required obligations will cause other participants to be unable to meet their obligations when due. Such a failure may cause significant liquidity or credit problems and, as a result, might threaten the stability of financial markets.
Payment Systems in Thailand
A payment system consists of a set of instruments, banking procedures and, typically, interbank funds transfer systems that ensure the circulation of money. Thais use various "payment instruments", such as cash, cheques, debit and credit cards, and e-money, to purchase goods and services, to transfer funds from one person to another, and to make financial investments. Most payment instruments involve a claim on a financial institution, such as a bank, a finance company. Financial institutions therefore need arrangements to transfer funds among themselves, either on their own behalf or that of their customers.
