Devavesm Palace

DEVAVESM Palace was once the residence of King Rama V’s younger brother, Prince Devawongvarophakarn, recognized as the father of foreign affairs in Thailand. Prince Devawongvarophakarn, was also the head of the Ministers Council and the second most important figure in the government next to Kings Rama V and VI.

THE DESIGN
DEVAVESM Palace was designed and constructed under the supervision of Mr. Edward Healey and under a company known as Siam Architect. Other buildings in the complex, including a boathouse, were designed and constructed by Italian engineers.

THE ARCHITECTURE
The main mansion stands stylishly in its neo-classic splendor incorporating Greek and Roman architecture to ornament its appearance. At present, DEVAVESM Palace Complex contains 4 buildings – the main mansion, the boathouse, Mom Lamaii Residence and Mom Chan Residence.

FEATURE ROOMS IN THE MAIN PALACE

1. Thepthai Prathanpon Room
The Thepthi Pratanpron Room is located on the second floor of the west wing. Prince Devawongwarophakarn made it a reception room for his relatives and important guests. After his death, this room was used for his merit-making funeral service.

2. Samosorn Panya Room
Also located on the second floor of the west wing and was used as a billiard room while Price Devawongwarophakarn was still alive. Now the room serves as a lecture and conference room.

EXHIBIT ROOMS IN THE MAIN MANSION DEVAVESM PALACE.

1. Thepsathit Sathaporn Room
This is a exhibition of the life story and works of His Royal Highness Prince Devawongse Varopakarn.

Located on the ground floor of the south wing, it features Prince Varophakarn’s biography through a video presentation entitled,”Three Reigns, Three Estates” while a multi-media presentation portrays the Prince’s “stories, works and genius”. As a Minister who dedicated himself so faithfully and became the closest advisor to the King, his roles are told through a timeline marking significant events during his time. An exhibit not to be missed is a group of puppets portraying the crisis in 1893 A.D. – an event so well remembered by generations of Thai people, as the Prince illustrated his diplomatic skills with such charisma and brilliance. Impressive items on display in this room include a marble bust of the Prince carved by Swiss sculptor Robert Wening who arrived in the Kingdom in the reign of King Rama V, a diamond brooch bearing King Rama VI insignia given to the Prince by King Rama VI himself, a belt, a pocket watch, a ring with his personal insignia, a beauty chest and chess board can also be seen. The Prince’s interest and knowledge of astrology were clearly reflected in a royal calendar with his handwriting recording daily events and the Theva Calendar, the prototype of the modern Thai calendar.

2. Buransathanburana Room
This is a exhibition on the architecture and restoration of Devavesm Palace.

The Buran Sathanburana, located on the northward ground floor, features the history of conservation efforts of historical buildings within the Bank of Thailand Complex. This exhibit is ideal for those interested in historical architecture conservation as it presents concepts and operations of historical buildings in detail. Viewers can enjoy multi-media presentations of “The Bank of Thailand’s Architecture and Architectural Conservation” that embraces a full scope of knowledge base related to the architecture found at the Bank of Thailand.
